If you owned a dry cleaners, restaurant, Pilates studio or most any other kind of business, the usual SEO rules would apply. Most businesses are only competing with their peers for the top-10 of Google. As a real estate agent you are competing with Zillow, Redfin, Realtor.com, Trulia, Movoto, Homes.com and a host of national brokerage websites. In most cases you only have a couple of open slots you are competing for and even then, if you see an agent in the top-10, they have owned their domain for 10 to 22 years.
